Must I File a Tax Return for 2021?
FEDERAL RULES
A single individual is required to file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return if gross income is at least $12,550*.
A single individual Age 65 or older is required to file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return if gross income is at least $14,250*.
Married filing jointly is required to file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return if gross income is at least $25,100*.
A child is required to file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return if he/she is claimed as a dependent on someone else's return and:
- Has Unearned Income of more than $1,100 or
- Has Earned Income of more than $12,550.
*You must file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return if you have more than $400 of Self-Employment Income.
Everyone receiving Form 1095-A [Health Insurance Marketplace Statement] or the Advanced Payments of the Premium Tax Credit thru the Health Insurance Marketplace must file a 2021 Federal Income Tax Return. Also if you have federal tax withheld or are eligible for a refund, you must file a return to claim your refund.
PENNSYLVANIA RULES
Every Pennsylvania resident, part-year resident or nonresident individual with more than $33 of PA income is required to file a PA Income Tax Return.
